The Mentor Program is a program that will target at-risk children and youth in Craven County. The program will implement, a one on one mentor to mentee, paid extracurricular programs for mentored children and paid life experience activities. This program will begin Summer 2019. At this time referrals must be completed by a community partner working with the youth due to limited availability in order to reach the highest risk children.

**There are no income guidelines for this program; the most at-risk children/youth will be considered for placement with a mentor prior to others** Once funding becomes available for this program mentors will be assigned to children on the waiting list based on the highest needs and the best match.

What difference it might be if we viewed these “at risk” kids in our community as kids with potential that needs to be uncovered! They are survivors, resilient, independent, resourceful! Absolutely we can pour into these kids, but after imagine what these kids can teach us about gratitude,love, loss, and life! We’re looking for mentors now who are interested in being the reason a child can say because of “________ I didn’t give up. I pushed forward and that person showed me how much they cared.” |

Time Commitment:
This is a volunteer position with flexible time to match whatever your schedule may be. We ask that you be able to set aside a minimum of four hours per month for each youth mentored. We recognize that each mentors schedule will vary due to the uniqueness of the role and the needs of the individual youth being served. Mentors can decide how many youth they would like to serve.
The program requires that you provide direct, one on one time with each of your assigned youth both in and outside of school for a minimum of four hours each month, although how you accomplish that is at your discretion within established program guidelines.

Mentor Role
- Develop and sustain a long-term, caring, trusting and accepting relationship with each youth
- Spend time with each youth, one-on-one and in the education setting a minimum of four hours per month
- Set realistic expectations and goals based on each youth’s strengths, talents, abilities and needs
- Teach and model life skills and healthy habits to contribute both to basic development and learning, and to contribute to building positive self-esteem
- Develop a talent/skill/area of interest with each youth to help develop positive self-esteem and experience growing confidence
- Provide enrichment resources and activities which include opportunities for cultural awareness, diversity and community service
- Contribute to youth acquiring behavioral management skills, tolerance, respect for others, courtesy and compassion
- Develop positive relationships with families, teachers and others involved in each youth’s life
- Reinforce basic academic skills and learning
- Model and promote good problem-solving and decision-making skills
Essential Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to relate to youth and to develop and sustain trusting, supportive relationships with them
- Ability to cultivate trusting relationships with caregivers, teachers and community members
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to use creativity and initiative in planning activities to continually develop youth
- Ability to work independently in diverse environments with limited supervision
- Ability to set goals and develop plans to meet those goals to ensure the development of each youth
- Ability to be physically mobile and meet vehicle driving demands safely while exercising good judgment
- Ability to exercise good judgment independently, in various situations and environments, and under varying levels of stress
Additional Job Requirements:
- Maintain current driver’s license, good driving record, and vehicle insurance
- Transport youth in personal vehicle as required for mentoring activities
- 21 years of age and older
- Submit to application, screening process and a background check (criminal record does not restrict you from being a mentor! We can discuss charges and convictions case by case basis)
- No arrests or felony convictions within the past three years (individuals with a sex offense are prohibited from being mentors)
- Attend an initial mentor orientation and training along with additional training sessions during each year of participation in the program
